n You’re the Judge—Tips for Contest Season

Jim Robison, DTM, District 7 Chief Judge

As club contests are being completed, area contests are being held, division

contests are coming up, and we are looking forward to the Fall District 7

Conference for the District contests, here are a few tips for having the best

possible contests we can.

1) If you've already completed at least 6 projects in the Competent

Communicator manual, and will not be competing in the contests beyond your

club, then please volunteer to serve as a judge. You may complete this Jim Robison, DTM
questionnaire to volunteer. The more judges we have available, the easier it is D7Chief Judge

for the contest organizers to get enough judges to ensure a fair contest.

2) Remember, if you serve as a judge at any contest beyond the club level, you CANNOT compete in

that same type of contest this season.

3) If you are a member of multiple clubs, and win contests in more than one club, you must choose

which Area contest to compete in. It's OK to compete in Humorous Speech Contest in one Area and

Table Topics Contest in a different Area, but you CANNOT compete in the same type of contest in two

different Areas.

4) If you are planning to be a presenter, or play a visible role in the District Conference (or in your

Division or Area contest) then don't plan on competing.

5) As the District Conference approaches, after

completion of the Area and Division Contests I will need

to locate individuals who can serve as Judges at the

District contest. Since judges at the District cannot be

members of the same club as any of the competitors, we

cannot lock in who the judges will be until we know who

the contestants will be. You can help us get a jump on

this by a) completing the questionnaire linked above, b)

letting your Division Governor and the District Chief

Judge know that you are available to serve as a Judge at

the District Contest, and c) responding promptly when

the District Chief Judge contacts you about serving as a

Judge.

6) If you would like to schedule a time for a judges

training, contact the District Chief Judge. Judges

training is not mandatory, but it is helpful in ensuring

that we have fair contests.

7) If you have questions about any particular rules

regarding contests, feel free to contact the District 7

Chief Judge for clarification.
