members sign up for meeting roles. Every week King tales the initiative to send out the meeting
planner sheet and sign people up for meeting roles. King is not shy in prodding people to sign up for
a role, and now almost everyone who attends a meeting has a pre-assigned role, and roles are
assigned before the meeting. King's organization, initiative, gentle prodding has made the meetings
run smoother since we come to the meeting knowing what to do, and who is doing it, and that our
meeting roles are covered.
Estella Louise Brame, American Red Cross, is an outstanding sergeant at arms, in addition to being
VPM of the Red Cross club. Her preparation for each meeting is excellent, and she has established a
gift contest for members who bring in visitors.

A Fun Gateway to Success in the Gateway to
Mt. Hood, Sandy Toastmasters
Nestled between Mt. Hood and the southeast communities of Boring and Estacada is Sandy,
Oregon. Ensconced in the lower level social activity area of the Cascadia Village Retirement center, every
Tuesday evening, is Sandy Toastmasters. A group of dedicated Toastmasters, welcoming guests and new
members to join them in the fun.
President Kelli Grover’s goal is to assist the club reach Distinguished club status this
year. “The Sandy Toastmaster club is a relatively relaxed culture, that is supportive,
constantly learning and values the positive effects of a little humor once in awhile.” She
continued, “ I enjoy observing the progressive development of the speech and
leadership skills of our club members - we are a small club which affords everyone
ample opportunity to hone these skills.
When asked about what he enjoys about the club, Vice President
Kelli Grover, CC Public Relations Harlan Wheeler replied, “It’s our cohesiveness; it’s
a place to go, learn and share our common goals of better
communication. We offer enthusiasm and respect in helping each other achieve our
desired levels of success. We are all practicing our communication skills for different
reasons and to share those reasons with those that care....this is what we are all about.”
To help reach their membership goal, they will have an open house on September 23rd
at the Sandy Public Library. If you or a friend lives or works in Sandy or the surrounding Harlan Wheeler
communities, please visit the club meeting and the open house or an upcoming meeting.

Every Toastmaster learns, early in his membership, that one of the fundamental purposes of
his training is to promote, for him, the technique of tactfully and gracefully receiving
criticism, and profiting thereby. The man who learns this great lesson builds into his
personality something of incalculable value to him, entirely apart from what it does for his
improvement in speech. Dr. Ralph Smedley, 1966, Personally Speaking
