Mr. Glen Meek
Portland, Oregon
Dear Glen:
In yesterday’s mail, I received a dittoed copy of some educational material, which was sent out by Ralph Smedley. The purpose was to show the organization of the District Educational Committee. I am enclosing a copy for you inasmuch as you would not have been put on the regular mailing list by this time. I have notified the Home Office in Santa Anna of your appointment as Educational Chairman and in due time you will be put on the mailing list and receive all of the Educational material from our Director, R. C. Smedley.
If you have an opportunity, contact Al Quine, and Al, I am sure, would be happy to turn over any material that he has.
With kindest regards,
Yours very truly,
R. G. Crakes, District Governor

Toastmistress Club to Get Charter from International
Miss Esther Campbell of Seattle, junior past-president of International Toastmistress clubs, will present a charter to the Rose Toastmistress club at a dinner Saturday night at the Malory hotel. Mrs. Grace Nelson, president of the local group will accept the charter. Don Nelson member of the board of directors of Toastmasters International will extend greetings from that organization.
The program to which guests have been invited, will demonstrate a typical meeting, with all members participating in impromptu one-minute talks on table topics for which Mrs. Frank Taylor will be director.
Mrs. Eleanor T. McMillan will serve as toastmistress and Mrs. J. R. Teethers will give an address titled “We Accept the Challenge”.
The entire program will be evaluated Charles Griffith of Seattle, lieutenant governor of the second district of Toastmasters International.
Organized in November for the Advancement of public speaking, presiding and all membership in Portland Rose unit has now reached a maximum of 30. At a Sunday breakfast at 11:00-am at the Mallory Hotel Miss Campbell will discuss plans for organizing a new unit with women who are interested.
In keeping with Toastmistress tradition, members will offer their services as speakers for community campaigns. At present, the club is helping on the speaker’s bureau for the Red Cross fund campaign to open Monday.

Toastmasters of Tillamook, Oregon, went on the air for the first time in February (1948), in the first radio forum held in Tillamook County, on the new station, KTIL. The program is sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce, and the Toastmasters are furnishing a goodly number of the speakers who appear in this forum. (Reported by President Donald B. Peterson)
Page 28 The Seventh Talk
The Bulletin of Oregon Toastmasters Club #424, of Portland, carries wise comments on Basic Training No. 7 We quote:
“One suggestion regarding the seventh talk, _ The Big Broadcast. Everyone who has tried it has been in trouble. Is it possible that we are trying to achieve too many things at one time? There is the manuscript to be read, eye contact maintained, gestures, given and voice modulation included. Even the experts don’t attempt that without memorizing the speech. Do you suppose we should learn to crawl before we try to run?

District meeting on April 17, 1948 at Eugene, Oregon. Zone Contest on June 5, 1948 in Eugene.
Quote: “You may have heard from some other source, but if not, we are going to have Ralph Smedely as our guest for that occasion. We do not want to take anybody away from the San Francisco Convention, but if any of your members can’t go there, urge them to come to the Zone meeting. There will be a luncheon at 12:30-pm, that Saturday noon, followed by an informal get-together in the afternoon. The ladies are to be entertained by the Toastmistress Clubs and we will all combine for the big affair that evening. The speeches should be tops this year.

Dear: Ruben
I presume you have noticed that we received a nice write-up, with a picture, of the Area Speak Off Contest held in Oregon City last March in the May issue of Toastmasters International (page 20).
This is certainly gratifying to use here at Oregon City and I am sure you played a part in helping to put this over with the group at Santa Ana.
I have heard indirectly on various occasions that you are getting along very nicely and I hope we will soon find you out at some of our gatherings.
With kindest regards, I am,
Sincerely Yours,

Personal Interview with the Founder
Toastmasters International, Santa Ana, California
November 1, 1948
Excerpt Pages 1 and 2
Dear Toastmaster
The “Personal Interview” has been neglected this season.
The mailings of “Progressive Training” seemed to me to be about all that I should impose on you, but it appears that some of you have missed the other feature. Since the “Progressive Training” bulletins go to the President and the Educational Chairman, some of the secretaries and deputy governors have felt left out. So here goes with another “Personal Interview” which is mailed to all four of the officers:
President, Secretary, Deputy Governor, and Educational Chairman.
First
The response to the new educational impulse is most gratifying. It appears that many of you – perhaps most of you – are catching on to the opportunities and advantages offered in the monthly schedules for “Progressive Training.” Some are sampling it cautiously, while others have plunged in whole-heartedly, and all these seem to be profiting by it.
There is no question that systematic, co-coordinated planning brings results in education. The only question is whether we have discovered the best system for you. The answer to this question must come from you, in comments, suggestions, inquiries, and reports of results.
Newly chartered clubs are not started on Progressive Training. Their first attention is to be given to Basic Training. We have started a new series of bulletins to all the new clubs, chartered within the last three or four months, to help them make the most of Basic Training. Later on, they will go on to the Progressive Training mailing list.
In Toastmasters International, the entire organization is a great laboratory, conducting experiments, evaluating results, and formulating policies. Each member of every club has his part in the process. We are guided by the results reported.
Second
The increasing interest in Basic Training is something for us to appreciate. Requests for certificates come in so rapidly that it is a problem to keep up with them in engrossing the diplomas. I hope that the men who are doing this good work are getting full value from it. This depends largely on your Educational Committee and its service in providing good evaluation.
I am now working on the second series in the Training Course, and hope to be able to make it available for ambitious students by January first. It outlines another year of interesting advance work for the man who has completed his Basic Training. I hope that some of your members will be ready to tackle it as soon as it is ready.
Third
The Toastmistress Clubs have no official connection with Toastmasters International. We work with them in such helpful relations as are possible, and a good many of their clubs have been established through the interest of our members. Occasional exchanges of speakers and other cooperative activities have been found enjoyable and profitable. But if the matter of organizing a Toastmistress Club in your community should come up, be sure to write to Miss Virginia Stewart, Alton, Illinois, who is in charge of extension for the Toastmistress Club in your community, and let the project be cleared through the proper channels. We do not advise you to take the initiative in such organization work, but to be friendly, cooperative and helpful if the occasion arises.
In every case, remember that your club’s primary responsibility is its own, members, to give them the best and fullest in speech training. Any extra-curricular activity which interferes with the program of training in your own club should be approached with extreme care, and undertaken only when the wisdom and necessity are clearly shown.”
Fourth
We are greatly pleased with the interest shown in road signs and banners. Now that these are available again, many clubs are ordering. The signs displayed on highways entering your community are excellent publicity, and a great help to visiting Toastmasters. The colorful banners, hung in your meeting room, may be viewed with pride by your members and with fruitful curiosity by all others who see it.
Fifth
Very gratifying are the reports from clubs. The average membership per club is going up. Many are showing a substantial number of associate members. This is all to the good, for the larger membership means better audiences, better programs, and more men in training.
Top honors go to Toastmasters of Ashland, Kentucky, on the basis of reports received to date. Ashland reports FORTY-FVE (45) men on the club roster. Who will top this one?
Finally
I remind you that we have on hand in the Home Office bulletins and schedules to meet most almost any need. When problems arise in your club, don’t risk mistakes. Let us know your problem, and we’ll try to help you solve it. In twenty-four years of experience, we have learned much that is useful, and all that experience is at your service.
Sincerely Yours,
Ralph C. Smedley
