1930’s

Oregon first Toastmasters club charted on April 17, 1935 with 18 members. In 1937, the Oregon Daily Journal published in the editorial section the first newspaper article about an Oregon Toastmasters club (Portland Toastmasters) on September 15, 1937. Despite the Great Depression, Portland Toastmasters with other clubs charted in Oregon thrived. The Oregon clubs were organized as Area 5 of District 2. During 1939, more clubs chartered in Oregon and decision made at 1939 convention to create District 7 for the Oregon clubs. Earnest C. Davies of Portland was elected Lit. Governor for District 2 for 1938-1939 Term. In 1940, Davies became the first district governor for District 7 in 1940.
