But we had our organization problems to deal with, too. Our annual funding via the
Student Council was to be withheld because we were not an “open” organization. We
had no women members. Our group developed a plan that appeased the Student
Council. We would accept female members of the Cougar Guard as an auxiliary
unit, as apprentices, and by the school year’s end we would break our ties with our
original sponsoring organization, a service fraternity. We would be an independent
organization, open to all students to vie for membership. PLANNING, SUPPORTING,
FAIRNESS

One of our auxiliary members was a journalism
student, and mid-year, she revealed our plan in a
classroom assignment, and that story eventually
got published in the school newspaper, The
Daily Cougar. Oops! It was time for a hastened
plan implementation. We quickly became an
independent organization and voted in our
first female members. Our annual funding was
secured and the athletic department picked
up our travel expenses to out-of-town games.
                          LISTENING, LEARNING, INTEGRITY

Wherever you have been, whatever you

Shasta and David Shehorn have done, wherever you are going -- when
interacting with others, there are values and

principles of conduct that help make this world a better place. Toastmasters is an

opportunity for reflection, for telling your story. The Toastmasters experience can

help you make your story, a story worth telling, again and again.

David Shehorn joined Toastmasters in 2012, around the time he retired from Longview

Fibre. He is currently serving Clark County Toastmasters as the Sergeant at Arms. He was a

2012 Democratic candidate for District 18b of the Washington House of Representatives.

I have three precious things which I hold fast and prize. The first is
gentleness; the second is frugality; the third is humility, which keeps
me from putting myself before others. Be gentle and you can be
bold; be frugal and you can be liberal; avoid putting yourself before
others and you can become a leader among men. Lao Tzu
