A Day of Fun, Education and
Inspiration—Toastmaster Leadership
Institute

By David Johnson, DTM- Division D Director

On June 27, 2015, Toastmasters from Central & West Oregon, SW Washington and
Northern California gathered at Wilsonville High School for the semi-annual Toastmasters
Leadership Institute to train incoming club officers.

The day of training started with District Governor
Phyllis Harmon, DTM, welcoming attendees and
installing the incoming Trio. Before Phyllis could
leave the stage there was a special surprise gift for
her -- a rendition of “One Singular Sensation” from
                                          Chorus Line, performed
                                          by several Toastmasters,
                                          organized by Ginger
                                          Killion

In the morning, Jana Barnhill presented “Be Your Best!” in
which she challenged attendees to not settle for being
comfortable with their Toastmasters experience, and
made everyone promise not to let their fellow members
settle either. Later, Jana and Robert gave ten great tips

with amusing anecdotes on how to lead effectively, taking
care of your club, your team and yourself with “Which Way
Did They Go? I’m Their Leader!”
Attendees enjoyed potluck breakfast and lunch, sharing their
favorite dishes with others, coordinated by Cathy Harris, Marvin
Mitchell and David Shehorn. During the afternoon break
everyone celebrated the 75th anniversary of District 7
with cake and hand-churned ice cream.

Adele O’Neal, DTM, gave attendees an update on the Revitalized Education Program. She
reviewed the project process to date, showing examples of the new program structure,
and screenshots of how members will be able access project requirements online. The
current intention is for a phased roll out in September 2016, when ten districts will get
access each month. An overview of the Revitalized Education Program is available here:

The majority of speakers for the breakout training sessions were local D7 Toastmasters.
This feat was managed by Phyllis Harmon serving in her new position of Education
Coordinator. There was one breakout session in the morning and two in the afternoon,
