e Power of Two—Continued from page 6)
Since chartering, Sporty Speakers has added more
members, continues to have fun and creative meetings,
and has a strong officer team who run all aspects of the
club.
Bill and Patrick, who are themselves charter members of
the club, have signed on to mentor the club and will say
their biggest sense of pride is the fact that they have
fully stepped back and the club is self sufficient. The
culture of diversity and creativity has stuck and they are
constantly amazed at each meeting. The club members
are very loyal, even to the extent that a charter member
who was sent to India for a three-month assignment
calls in and participates remotely each week.
What did they learn from this experience? It’s “the
power of two.” Each feels they complimented and
encouraged each other throughout the whole process.
For a leadership project consider joining forces with
someone you look up to—someone who pushes you to
be better and someone you would not want to let
down. With clear goals and teamwork, starting the
Sporty Speakers Toastmasters club was a fun and
rewarding High Performance Leadership Project!
Is it worth the work? If you ask Bill and Patrick, they
would say a heartfelt YES!
Bill Hernandez is a member of West Beaverton Toastmasters, TV
Toastmasters, and a charter member of Sporty Speakers. Patrick
Touhy is a member of West Beaverton Toastmasters and a charter
member of Sporty Speakers.
A pertinent story or a picturesque word is
remembered when the argument has been
forgotten (Dr. Ralph C. Smedley)
