’s Next in Line as Area Governor?

It’s strange but true: One of the first tasks an Area Governor is asked to do
is to identify his or her successor for the next Toastmasters year. That’s one
reason why the Club Visit Report asks for club officers to identify
members who are interested in District leadership roles. When an Area
Governor fills out a Club Visit Report with club officers, it’s the right time
to mention that a club member is looking for a bigger challenge. In
general these behaviors may mark you as the right Toastmaster to become an Area or even a Division
Governor: You visit other clubs to support Toastmasters
friends there
You are active in your home club
You talk up the benefits of being a You participate in District conferences
Toastmaster You are working on an Advanced Leader Silver
You attend District training sessions award
You volunteer as a speech contest official
The following traits, among others, may mean you are right for a Governor role: good
communications, diligence, follow-through and curiosity. There are no set requirements for being an
Area Governor, no specific awards you must have earned or offices you must have held. The most
important thing is a strong desire to help other Toastmasters become the best they can be. It’s a
fabulous learning opportunity that will broaden your Toastmasters skills.
Our Area Governors are visiting clubs this month. Now is a great time to express your interest in the
rewards and opportunities of being an Area or Division Governor.
The five Area Governors in the Willamette Division are looking for next year’s leaders. Are you
someone they should know about? If so, tell Rita Childs, Area 61; Carrie Henderson, Area 62; Kay
Watson, Area 63; Ann Kroetch, Area 64; or Robyn Knox, Area 65. Or you can reach out to me at

Speech Contests Leave Us Laughing
Laughter topped the agenda at the Willamette Division speech contest, held
October. 15 at Emanuel Hospital’s Lorenzen Auditorium.
With Humorous Speeches leading in to Table Topics, the
contestants entertained the audience with tales about
language barriers, a daredevil ski run and the tribulations
of being married to a photographer.
The Humorous Speech winner was Kathleen Sabella,
whose tales of weight loss struck the audience’s funny
bone. Phil Lowmaster placed second and Rodrigo De
Souza third.
Winner of the Table Topics was Karen Semprevivo,
with Lisa Hutton placing second and Mary Lee Turner third. The
winners advance to the District 7 contests to be held November 8
at the Fall Conference.
