and energy is not just showcased in Toastmasters but in her everyday life. She always has a smile and
a kind word to help brighten the day. Thank you for selecting her to be September’s Member of the
Month.” Racheal Schartner, Table Games Pit Manager, Seven Feathers Casino Resort and former
Toastmaster
“I have posted in my office a couple of quotes that Donna sent out several years ago that I read and
contemplate on often. I also pass them on to others: ‘We do not see things as they are, we see them
as WE are.’ The other quote is ‘You live with your thoughts, so be careful what they are.’ Donna is a
very positive, compassionate person and upbeat person. I value knowing her.” Kathy Hammond, Cage
Manager, Seven Feathers Hotel Casino and fellow Toastmaster
Donna also has a very humorous and entertaining personality, which was clearly evidenced in many
of her speeches. An example of this was when she delivered her speech entitled “Power Windows.”
She described the experience of riding with her son in his car. She was having a wonderful time with
her arm out the window. Unfortunately she did not anticipate, and was not prepared, when her son
decided to roll up the power window on her side before she could pull her arm back inside the

car. As painful as this experience was, Donna managed to delight us all, and get us all laughing, at her
painful dilemma. Donna is the perfect example of what a Toastmaster should be.
Other honored nominees for September were:

Shane Slayer, Roseburg Club, was nominated because he willingly stepped into roles as needed.
Encouraged other members to improve and to step into bigger roles. Made it to all the meetings in a
busy summer month, when many of us were unavailable. What an inspiration! Shane is an exemplary
gentleman and always comes to meetings prepared and positive. He demonstrates what
Toastmaster's stands for each day he speaks, by using colorful, reflective, and powerful language.
Every time he speaks, the club listens to his sage advice. We are blessed to have him in our group.
Renee Kenna, Southern Oregon Speechmasters, was nominated because she stepped up to fill
whatever roles were needed, made announcements at the beginning and end of meetings to
educate and encourage members toward their goals, greeted guests and made sure they felt
included and welcome, and smiled her beautiful smile through it all!
Scott Fraser, University Toastmasters, was nominated because he is always there to lend a hand

when anyone in our club is in need. He gives a lot of his personal time to ensure the club is
functioning at its best and steps up for the good of the club consistently. He is central to our club
success!

Coos Bay Talent Show and other updates

The Coos Bay Club # 249 held a great Talent Show on August 8th from 6pm until 830pm. I invited the
Bandon Toastmasters Club to be the Talent Show judges. Three of the clubs members attended and
judged the 10 talent show acts, which ranged from playing the guitar, playing the piano, and native
flute music. The fundraiser will help with inmate member dues for toastmasters.
Our division clubs were busy getting their officers trained and selecting dates for the area club
contests. Our Division Humorous Contest will be October 11th at 7 Feathers Casino starting at 1pm.
