FIELD NOTES
Table Topics &
The Drivers Dilemna
B. Lucky Coyne, ATMS
Virtually everyone who comes to a Toastmasters meeting
travels there by car. That common factor grants us some
fodder for Table Topics.
So let’s spin our wheels.
We all face the possibility of unfair treatment on the road.
Sometimes it comes from other drivers. At other times the
police may be perceived as villains. Also the car insurance
process may have inherent flaws.
If you were Topicsmaster at a future meeting, consider
these queries:
• How do you handle a tailgater?
• What can discourage a driver who weaves in and out?
• How do you deal with a police run speed trap?
• What criteria should be used to require proper road
signs?
• Which is the most dangerous turn you’ve ever
encountered?
• What change would you like to see happen in traffic
court?
• How can those in traffic accidents be assured that claims
adjusters not target the driver for total liability?
Out of your thoughtful responses may develop fruitful
ideas for us to advocate for needed improvement. The road
to relevant progress is ours to assume. Let us not be content
with a dead end!
