On October 12th New Horizons Toastmasters celebrated its 60th anniversary with a get-together of current and former members. The morning was kicked off with an inspirational speech by Dick Warren. Following him was an award presentation by current president, James Wantz, who acknowledged and recognized members who were instrumental in keeping the torch of New Horizons lit through the darker times of reduced membership and flagging commitment.
A special acknowledgement was given to Phyllis Harmon, LGET and New Horizons member, who put forth significant effort to help New Horizons rise to the strong and vibrant club it is today. The club’s history was presented by Robert Wells, VPE, in a humorous piece of storytelling where he took on the persona of New Horizons. He spoke about how he had started life with a different name, Beyond Basic (club #1360 chartered with that name but is now New Horizons), about the people that helped see him through a rough patch, and concluded by thanking everyone in attendance for helping him celebrate 60 years. Bill Maher, Table Topicsmaster, roused everyone with witty, engaging, and thought provoking questions for the remainder of the morning.
Cathy Harris oversaw the wonderful decorations: placards, ribbons, and diamonds that adorned the room. The Diamond Anniversary was both evident in color and festivity as food and sparkling cider were provided for attendees to toast the ongoing health of the club. The year ahead looks bright for New Horizons. If you are interested in seeing what the hubbub is all about, visit us on Saturday mornings @ PixelGigs (7504 SW Bridgeport Road) in Tualatin. We start promptly at 8 a.m. and end at 9:15 a.m.
