Greetings, District 7

Marsha Ware, DTM

squirrel

We are off to a great start this year, with a full team of leaders.  Last June I asked all of you to extend your hands to help with the future of District 7 and those hands have sure been busy.  So many things are going on in D7.

We are updating our website, growing new clubs, helping those struggling clubs, expanding our membership and bring this wonderful family we call District 7 together creating a solid foundation on which to build on for many years to come.  It is so gratifying to see the outpouring of support and the enthusiasm the members of this district have this year.

I want to challenge each member, club, area and division to be the best it can be.  Reach out to your fellow club members who are struggling, to those low member clubs which are struggling by being a club coach, making every club, are and division distinguished.  Not just for the ribbon but for the personal achievement, knowing WE DID IT!

To achieve a solid foundation, I need your help.  Last June I said that I can't and won't do it without you.  You are the eyes and ears of this district.  The Top Trio can't be everywhere.  That is where you come in.  Please let us know if there are any questions, concerns, suggestions we can help with. If a club is in trouble, let us know as soon as possible so we can help.  If you have a great suggestion for the district, let us know.  It is OUR district.

Thank you all for your help this year.  I know we will work as a team in order to achieve all our goals, personal, club, area, division and district and next July we will repeat as a Distinguished District.

Anytime a commitment is made to someone or to some organization or to some project, the challenge is ever-present to follow that commitment to its completion. What begins with excitement and enthusiasm often requires willpower to complete.  The Toastmaster program is no exception to that rule.

The entire Toastmaster program for the individual is carefully thought out and planned.  When followed, it results in significant personal growth in multiple areas.  What does this mean practically?  Several things come to mind:

  • Be faithful in attending your club meetings.  The club needs you and you benefit from being there.
  • Volunteer for a meeting role at every time your club meets.  Rotate through all the various meeting roles (toastmaster, timer, grammarian, evaluator, general evaluator, table topics master, speaker, etc.).  Each role has a specific challenge that helps develop your listening, thinking and speaking skills.
  • Speak regularly.  Develop the discipline of planning, developing and presenting speeches.  To facilitate this, keep a list of speech ideas as they occur. When a speech is needed, you have a collection of ideas that interest you.
  • Give manual speeches!  Do not permit yourself to become lazy by giving non-manual speeches.  There is a manual for every kind of speech!  Keep a beginning manual on hand and use it when your speech does not fit a particular advanced manual that you have.  Remember that you can submit as an educational achievement the completion of one beginning manual per year for every club to which you belong.  Set an example to your newer club members by always giving a manual speech.  It is a discipline that is part of your growth as a Toastmaster.
  • Set your own pace.  It is important to remind ourselves that the Toastmaster program is self-paced.  You are being encouraged to “stay the course” but do it at the pace determined by you.  Other colleagues will go faster and/or slower; that is okay. Do what works for you.
  • Encourage fellow Toastmaster colleagues.  Toastmasters is not a competition; it is a community of people who are interested in personal growth and improvement.  Everyone needs encouragement.  Be liberal with your encouragement to others.  As Mary Poppins said, “A spoonful of sugar helps the medicine go down.”

As you work the program and remain faithful in the execution of the above points, an amazing thing happens! Growth occurs.  Your critical thinking skills begin to sharpen.  Your ability to listen is honed. Speaking skills expand and improve.  Confidence follows as you realize that the change you wanted at the outset of your Toastmaster journey is happening. Joy and excitement follow that discovery once you realize that the process works!

Keep on keeping on.

                                    Be faithful.

                                                           Stay the Course

What a whirlwind life has been these past few weeks. There were contest in Central, Downtown, Willamette, Northern, Columbia, Sunset, and Capitol Divisions. Work beckoned and I had to attend a Learning 2007 conference in Orlando, Florida, right in the middle of Disney World so I couldn’t be at Sunset and Central.

The weekend of October 27th and 28th the MAC team were in Grants Pass and I had a great time meeting new Toastmasters and friends. We had a potluck before the contest so we could talk with members and share information or answer questions.

The weekend of November 3rd and 4th the MAC team is heading to Bend for the contest to meet the members and check out the spring conference hotel. I’m looking forward to an exciting time.

I encourage all of you to keep adding new members to your clubs and keeping an eye out for companies or communities that want to start a new club.

Here are the clubs as of October 1st, that have gotten Goal 7 completed. A few of them have completed Goal 8 and others are almost there.

Lunch Bunch, Rose City Toasters, Portland, Lake Oswego, Rising Star, Toast of the Region, ODS Tower Talkers, Essayons, The University Club, On First, MAC, Evergreen, Battleground, Progressive Voices, West Beaverton, Wallmasters International, Noontime Nomads.

Other clubs are reaching with stretched fingers towards Goal 7, Challenge yourself to ask a friend, colleague, or co-worker to attend a meeting with you. Once someone is excited about Toastmasters they help spread the news. ASK, ASK, ASK.

Remember, the Fall conference is coming, November 16-17, Eugene, OR at the Valley River Inn. It’s in a great location, has a shopping center right next door! So pack your bags, load up the car and prepare to have FUN! Oh, and don’t forget to register on line at www.d7toastmasters.org/2007Fall_Online.htm

Conference

2007 Fall Conference

Janice Hallmark, DTM

Conference Chair

The leaves have all changed, it's getting colder and you know what that means. It's time for the Fall Conference. This year it will be held in Eugene at the Valley River Inn November 16 and 17.

This is your chance to shine as YOU ARE THE STAR! You are the one that people are coming to see. We have great education sessions in place; exciting and fun speech contests planned; all we need is you. The conference is also the time when we have our business meeting. This is very important -- we cannot run the district without our members giving us input and voting. Make sure that your President or Vice President of Education has filled out the proxy form.

If you have a break from the conference, there are plenty of activities close by. The Valley River Inn is right next to Valley River shopping center. Anything you need can be found -- chocolate, knives, you can even have your eyes checked. The adjoining areas have a bridal shop, Barnes & Noble and a Toys R Us.

If the weather is decent, there are bike/hike paths and if you prefer, our new movie complex. Make your arrangements now. You can register online at www.d7toastmasters.org/2007Fall_Online.htm

I can't wait to see you. Since you are the star, I will have my autograph book handy.

Coaching

Back to Life

Coaching Back to Life

By B. Lee Coyne, ATM-S,

Club Rebuilding Chair

When your club goes ouch, you may be needing a Coach.  That is your special tool to bring a dying club back to life and avoid the risk of extinction.

There are times when clubs lose members around renewal time.  Still other members drop out due to expanded job responsibilities or second jobs to make ends meet.  And of course, ill health and moving away can deplete your membership ranks.

Who will step up to the plate to help fill that gap?   Club coaches are in demand for almost every division during the course of a year. You are that Personal Trainer to help that weak

club revive itself and get back into shape.  Often an outsider can come up with strategies.

Having an Open House can help a bit, but is rarely a cure-all.  Attracting new prospects can be a mega-challenge.  Among other approaches are having an unusual theme meeting in which a local service club or nonprofit group is saluted.  That helps bring in new guests to gain exposure.  Giving recognition to others can be the first step in bonding.

We'd love to have you "try your magic" and become a coach.  If you've been in TI more than two years, let others benefit from the lessons you've learned.  Turn that flab into muscle as

a Club Coach.  For more details, email: luckycoyne@yahoo.com; tel. 503-365-7533.

My Success With Toastmasters

From Lyn Troxell, CC

 Editor of Timberlines.

We all have our reasons for joining Toastmasters. Whatever the reason, most have achieved success beyond their wildest dreams. It is important for people to hear these stories of success. It is my privilege to introduce you to members who have had their lives changed by Toastmasters.

What Toastmasters
has done for me

Datta Groover, DTM

I joined Toastmasters primarily to improve my ability to speak in public. I feel that I have made some significant advancement toward that goal, as well as in other areas I didn’t expect.

As a result of Toastmasters, I find myself not only more confident in public speaking, but in many areas of verbal communication.   I find myself able to express myself using fewer words with more effectiveness.  I find myself more aware of the importance of saying only what needs to be said, and stopping.  How many times have you heard somebody speak; at the office, in a social situation, even at the supermarket -- and you just wish they would shut up and sit down?

Although public speaking is very important to me, other types of speaking are also important to me, whether I'm speaking to a good friend or a potential client.  I have been surprised at how much these other areas of speaking have improved in my life as a result of Toastmasters.  How nice it is to be able to make oneself clear and be understood the first time, without having to re-explain.

Toastmasters put me on track to my greatest passion in life, which is now my business.  People hire me to speak, and they hire me to help them improve their level of communication.  I have had many people call or email me saying that due to a workshop or speaker’s coaching sessions they’ve had with me, not only has their business communication and effectiveness increased, so has their personal communication.  Just today, a woman appreciatively told me that because of what her husband received through my training, his life has changed completely due to his level of communication.

I belong to 3 Toastmasters clubs.  Everyone I work with, everyone I care about, and just about everyone I know gets encouragement from me to visit and join Toastmasters.  I really believe it is just about the best investment a person can make in their life.
